Next How To Guide: How To Test Water (pool)

  • Balance the pool water by adjusting the pH to 7.2–7.6 using pH Minus, pH Plus or Muriatic Acid
  • Use a Kem-Tek algaecide to prevent algae from forming
  • Treat the pool with Metal and Calcium Eliminator and Ultra Clarifier, and then shock the pool with a shock product
  • Clean and vacuum the pool, removing any debris, and clean the filtration system
  • Run the filtration system for one to two days
  • Turn off the filtration system and following the manufacturer’s instructions to drain the pump, filter heater and all other applicable equipment
  • Clean the filtration system, clear and plug pool lines, and store everything in an appropriate place to prevent freezing
  • Lower the water level based on the manufacturer or builder’s instructions
  • Place the cover over the pool; the cover’s edge should be sealed to prevent wind from getting under it and cut down on debris which may accumulate during the off season
  • Balance the pool water by adjusting the pH to 7.2–7.6 using pH Minus, pH Plus or Muriatic Acid
  • Shock the pool and test to make sure it has between 5 to 10 parts per million (ppm) chlorine
  • Clean and vacuum pool and clean the filtration system
  • Reduce the filter’s running time by 50 percent
  • Periodically check the chlorine level and balance as needed
  • Check and recommendations of your pool equipment manufacturer for your specific region

Even if you do not completely close the pool, you may want to cover it to keep leaves and debris out and conserve chemicals. If you do cover the pool, treat with an algaecide and shock the pool. Test regularly to keep water clean. Follow a regular pool care maintenance schedule to avoid problems. For help with a specific question, you can call our free helpline at 1-800-SOS-POOL (767-7665)
