Previous Troubleshooting Tip: Brown, Mustard or Yellow Algae

Next Troubleshooting Tip: Red or Pink Algae

  • Test and adjust the pH level of your pool or spa water to 7.4
  • Shock with a Kem-Tek Step 3 Shock product, at two or three times the normal shock treatment
  • Scrub black spots with wire algae brush
  • Do not operate pump for several hours; when water is calm place Black Algaecide directly over spots
  • Wait 24 hours after the shock treatment, then use any of the following: Algaecide 60% Concentrated, Green Algaecide, Phosphate Remover or Algaecide and Clarifier as part of your normal maintenance to help prevent further problems
  • Use Metal and Calcium Eliminator to prevent stains
  • For help with a specific question, you can call our free helpline at 1-800-SOS-POOL (767-7665)

Important note: Black algae can leave spores in plaster that can grow again if water has low chlorine levels. It is important to add a liquid algaecide as part of your regular maintenance routine.
